African Cup: Ivory Coast beat Burkina to qualify for quarters

Salomon Kalou celebrates his goal for Ivory Coast against Burkina Faso in the Africa Cup of Nations.

Ivory Coast's star-studded team beat Burkina Faso 2-0 Thursday to seal qualification to the quarterfinals of the Africa Cup of Nations.
Salomon Kalou put the Ivory Coast ahead in the first half and victory was sealed as Bakary Kone headed an own goal in the final minutes of the Group B clash in the Estado Neuvo de Malabo in Equatorial Guinea.
Ivory Coast beat Sudan 1-0 in their opening match and look set to qualify as group winners.
Earlier, Sudan and Angola shared four goals in their Group B match at the same stadium.
It leaves Angola in second place in the section and in a strong position to go through with Ivory Coast who they meet Monday.
Chelsea's Kalou thumped home his shot in the 16th minute after a cross by his club teammate Didier Drogba .
Burkina Faso pressed at the start of the second half, but it was Arsenal's Gervinho who had the best chance for the Ivory Coast from close range.
Kalou pulled up injured and was substituted before his side survived a real scare as Burkina Faso striker Moumouni Dagano outjumped Souleymane Bamba only to see his header hit the woodwork.
Kone's looping 82nd minute back header sealed his side's fate as it flew over his goalkeeper Daouda Diakite. With two defeats in two games they are going home.
In the earlier match, Sudan ended a 36-year Africa Cup of Nations goal drought, but they had to come from behind twice to draw with Angola.
Mohamed Bashir twice leveled for Sudan with former Manchester United striker Manucho grabbing Angola's goals. StumbleUpon

Barcelona knocked Real Madrid out of Spanish Cup

Barcelona's Pedro celebrates after scoring the opening goal in the Spanish Cup quarterfinal against Real Madrid.
January 25, 2012
Barcelona survived a late onslaught from rivals Real Madrid to win their Spanish Cup quarterfinal tie 4-3 on aggregate and knock the holders out.
In a dramatic game at Barcelona's Camp Nou stadium, the hosts went 2-0 up thanks to goals from Pedro and Daniel Alves before strikes from Cristiano Ronaldo and Karim Benzema leveled the match at 2-2.
Real laid siege to their opponents' goal in the final stages, even after defender Sergio Ramos was sent off, but couldn't find the goal that would have taken them through.
Jose Mourinho's side complained bitterly to the referee after the match but the result is sure to intensify pressure on the Portuguese coach, who has been forced to deny press rumors he is set to leave the club in June.
Real had the first chance of the match inside 15 seconds as a mistake from Gerard Pique let Gonzalo Higuain in on goal but the Argentina striker fired wide with only Barca keeper Pinto to beat.
Higuain had another two chances to open the scoring but Pinto saved his close range effort from Xabi Alonso's free kick, before blocking a shot after he had surrendered possession.
Germany international Mesut Ozil then struck the bar with a fierce shot from 35 yards with Pinto beaten, before Cristiano Ronaldo drew another save from Barca's reserve keeper.
A melee ensued after Real midfielder Lassana Diarra brought down Argentina striker Lionel Messi and was fortunate not to receive a second yellow card.
Real were made to pay for their profligacy when Messi ran at Real's defense and teed up Pedro to score shortly before the break, and just minutes later Brazilian Alves made it two with a thunderous drive into the top corner.
In the second half Real came back at their opponents as Ronaldo rounded Pinto from Ozil's pass to make it 2-1 and when France international Benzema made it 2-2 with 18 minutes left Real sensed victory.
They continued to pour forward after Ramos was shown a second yellow card but couldn't find the vital third goal.
Barcelona will now face either Valencia or Levante in the semifinals. The pair play Thursday, with Valencia 4-1 up from the first leg.
In Wednesday's other tie, Athletic Bilbao sealed a tie with third division Mirandes in the final four after their 1-0 win at Mallorca gave them a 3-0 aggregate victory. StumbleUpon

Joe Paterno: Former Penn State football coach dies at 85

Joe Paterno: Former Penn State football coach dies at 85

File photo of Joe Paterno taken in 2009
22 January 2012
The legendary former football coach of Penn State University, Joe Paterno, has died, reports say.
Mr Paterno led Penn State to more wins than any other top division college football coach in US history.
He was sacked in November 2011 after 46 years in the post, amid accusations that he failed to act over child abuse claims against an assistant coach.
Mr Paterno, 85, was suffering from lung cancer. He fell and broke his pelvis at his home in December.
His family said on Sunday that "he died as he lived".
"He fought hard until the end, stayed positive, thought only of others and constantly reminded everyone of how blessed his life had been," they said in a statement.
'Great sorrow'
Mr Paterno was a hero to many for winning more games than anyone else in major college football - 409 victories at Penn State.
But his reputation became tarnished when, in November, his former assistant coach, Jerry Sandusky, 63, was arrested for allegedly abusing eight boys between 1994 and 2009.
Mr Paterno was forced to resign after it emerged he had been told that Mr Sandusky had been seen abusing a boy as young as 10 in a locker room shower in 2002, but failed to alert the police.
Mr Paterno said he had alerted the university's athletic director about the allegation, but regretted not taking it further.
Police have said that Mr Paterno fulfilled his minimum legal requirement but have suggested the coach had a moral responsibility to do more.
"This is a tragedy," the former coach told the Washington Post. "It is one of the great sorrows of my life. With the benefit of hindsight, I wish I had done more".

Olympics re-sale website to relaunch

Re-sale: Olympics chiefs will rlauch the website for fans to sell unwanted Games tickets
17th January 2012

London 2012 will relaunch their Olympic ticket re-sale site this afternoon but the public will not be able to buy the newly available tickets until April.
The computer problems which saw the site suspended 11 days ago has led to organisers changing their plans.
Instead of the public being able to buy the tickets on a first-come, first-served basis when they become available, London 2012 will now buy back any unwanted tickets over the next two weeks from 3pm today and then sell them again from April
LOCOG commercial director Chris Townsend said: "We are sorry for any inconvenience caused by the suspension of our ticketing resale platform.
'We made a commitment to our customers to give them a safe, secure and legal way of selling Olympic and Paralympic tickets which they are no longer able to use.
'We are delivering on that commitment, and will buy any tickets that customers are no longer able to use at face value until February 3.

'Every ticket we purchase from the public will be offered back to the public from April. We believe this system - purchasing the tickets back from customers now, and offering them again from April, will result in a better customer experience for everyone.
'Our main objective has always been to provide a platform for people to resell their tickets in a safe, secure and legal way.
'This is the right solution, at the right time given we also have test event tickets on sale currently.'
The re-sale site failed to cope with demand on the first day it was launched and caused frustration to tens of thousands of people who tried to buy tickets that appeared to be available but had not been removed from the system.

Organisers asked Ticketmaster to come up with a solution but the new system will see re-sold tickets made available at the same time as the 1million 'contingency' tickets that will go on sale from April, rather than being sold to the public now - and risking another failure of the system.
A London 2012 spokeswoman said: 'Our main objective has always been to provide a platform for people to resell their tickets in a safe, secure and legal way. This is the right solution, at the right time given we also have test event tickets on sale currently.
'The platform is there to help people resell tickets in a safe, secure and legal way, recognising that we asked people to commit a long time before the Games and that circumstances may change.'

Carlos Tevez: Inter Milan offer £20.7m for Manchester City striker

Carlos Tevez
Monday, 16 January 2012

Inter Milan have tabled a £20.7m bid for Carlos Tevez, but it is unlikely to meet Manchester City's valuation for the Argentine striker.
"Our offer is 25m euros - now it depends on them whether they accept," said Inter president Massimo Moratti after their 1-0 win over AC Milan.
"The offer is there. Now we are free to decide whether to go ahead or not."
AC Milan withdrew from talks to sign Tevez, 27, on Thursday after Alexandre Pato refused to join Paris St Germain.
Milan had already agreed personal terms for the player, but were forced to pull out of negotiations with City.
PSG have also expressed interest in Tevez and Moratti claimed clubs in England were also in the hunt.

"I believe there are still other teams involved for the striker," he added. "There are clubs in England as well as PSG. In football there are no secrets.
"Do we need Tevez? At this moment, it seems not, but football gives different answers every day."
The Milan derby was settled by a single goal, scored by Argentine forward Diego Milito.
Afterwards, Inter coach Claudio Ranieri was coy about his side's chances of striking a deal for Tevez, telling Sky Sport Italia: "You never know. Do we really need him? You journalists certainly do."
Talking to Rai Sport, Ranieri said: "If he joins he'll be very welcome."
And in his post-match press conference, he said, according to the club's official website: "Tevez? If the president wants to give the city of Milan a present. I'm used to working with what I've got."
Tevez has not played for City since they beat Birmingham on 21 September.
Mancini alleged he refused to come off the substitutes' bench in September's Champions League defeat at Bayern Munich, while the player maintained there had been a misunderstanding.
An internal club investigation concluded that Tevez, who joined City in July 2009, was guilty of five breaches of his contract and he was fined four weeks' wages, reduced to two following intervention from the Professional Footballers' Association.

Manchester United 3-0 Bolton

Paul Scholes
14/01/12
There's a rumour doing the rounds that Paul Scholes was so excited when he was asked to come out of retirement that the first thing he did was spend £40 on a new pair of football boots.
It might be fact, it might be fiction. But it’s the kind of apocryphal tale about Manchester United’s born-again 37-year-old that is utterly believable.
Scholes has always led an uncomplicated existence. He lives for his family, he loves football and the club he served throughout a playing career that was supposed to have ended after last season’s Champions League Final.
But instead of reaching for his slippers and a pint of his favourite John Willie Lees bitter, the midfielder United fans call their ‘Ginger Ninja’ is back and where he belongs.
His first start since making a shock return in last week’s Manchester derby was typical Scholes. First he got lucky when referee Peter Walton decided that the hack into the stomach of Bolton’s outstanding Mark Davies was more mistimed than malicious.
And then, with Sir Alex Ferguson’s men frustrated with their inability to turn their dominance into goals, he produced the kind of strike that used to be his trademark.
Ferguson said: “Paul has popped up with a goal when he should have been sitting deep controlling the game.
“But he has always had an instinct for goal. He had an eye for goal when he was a boy and he has shown us that again. When you have got the quality that Paul has you don’t lose it.
“Our first-half performance was good. We played some fantastic football. We had to wait until near half-time to get the first goal but once we did we were in a good position.”
Scholes in his pomp was a maker and taker of goals, his late runs making him impossible for defenders to detect.
When Wayne Rooney’s driven cross flew across the face of Adam Bogdan’s goal in first-half injury-time, there was Scholes to apply a typically unflustered finish.
It was his first goal since he scored against Fulham in August 2010 – and his first at Old Trafford since he found the net in a Carling Cup semi-final derby almost three years ago.
Once the home team were ahead there was little doubt that they would move level on points with Manchester City at the top of the table. At times, Scholes’ lack of match sharpness was obvious and he looked a weary man when Ferguson replaced him with Ji-Sung Park in the 69th minute. But you can be sure he already has his eyes fixed on an 11th championship medal.
Owen Coyle’s hopes that his side could play on United’s nerves were ended when Danny Welbeck produced a neat 74th-minute finish.
And Michael Carrick showed that he is returning to top form with a glorious strike seven minutes from time.
Bolton manager Coyle said: “Paul Scholes makes for a great story but not for us.
“At 1-0 we were still in the game. Man United have world-class players but for me the best player on the park was Mark Davies who was outstanding.
“My young players are getting better by the week. David Ngog, Adam Bogdan and Mark Davies continue to get better and stand us in good stead for the season.
“We’d like to bring people in and if we are able to do that and stay in the Premier League, then next summer Bolton Wanderers will be in the best position they have been in for many years.”
It looked like Bolton keeper Bogdan was in for a busy afternoon when Nani curled a shot just wide with less than a minute gone.
Bogdan denied Welbeck from Carrick’s exquisite pass and his goal led a charmed life as David Wheater intercepted Antonio Valencia’s cross and Rooney saw his header chested off the line by Davies. Bogdan excelled again when Welbeck was sent tumbling by Zat Knight’s barge and referee Walton pointed to the spot. Rooney’s aim from 12 yards was true, but the keeper leapt to his right to produce a fine save.
Rooney has now missed four of his last eight penalties.
Scholes finally got the breakthrough, but when Bolton came out after the break with more attacking intent, the home side immediately began to look uncertain.
Ngog should have done better than shoot over after fine work by Davies. Then Martin Petrov’s volley was blocked bravely by Rafael.
But once Rooney had slipped in Welbeck to slide a smart finish past Bogdan it was game over and Carrick applied the coup de grace with a wonderful left-footed curler from 25 yards.
But it wasn’t all joy for United, as Rio Ferdinand revealed after the match on Twitter.
“Wow, not feeling great,” he Tweeted. “Concussion after a clash of heads I’m told… as I don’t even remember the game! Goodnight world!”

SIR ALEX FERGUSON IN £10M BID FOR FRANK LAMPARD

MANCHESTER United are preparing an amazing swoop for Frank Lampard.

saturday,14, jan, 2012
Sir Alex Ferguson wants to sign the unsettled Chelsea midfielder to get his side’s Premier League title challenge back on track.

The champions are believed to have sounded out Chelsea through their chief executive David Gill.

And Lamps would make the move if Chelsea accept a £10m-plus deal after Blues boss Andre Villas-Boas has sidelined him at the club.

The move would provide an incredible opening to the January trans- fer window and would rock the Premier League.

Fergie finds his club three points behind leaders Manchester City after two surprise defeats on the bounce against Blackburn and Newcastle.

But he has a lengthy injury list, particularly in midfield where he is still missing the likes of Tom Cleverley, Anderson and particularly box-to-box merchant Darren Fletcher.

Since Paul Scholes retired in the summer he has been missing an old head to help guide his team and provide vital goals, and he feels at 33, Lampard is the man to do the job.

Villas-Boas has fallen out with Lampard and has made their differences personal.

He has tried to make the club legend a scapegoat for their poor form by dropping him from the side for the less effective summer signing of Raul Meire- les, who is a manager’s man.

But it was Lampard who typically scored the winner against Wolves on Monday to possibly help save AVB his job after a 3-1 home defeat by Aston Villa and three points from 12 in the league.

It is suspected that AVB is trying to clear out the old guard from the club and selling Lampard to United might give the rookie boss the perfect way out of the situation.

The only problem is that the Chelsea fans will never forgive him because they idolise Lampard who has been at the club almost 11 years after joining from West Ham in 2001.

He has been at the heart of their three titles, FA Cup and Carling Cup victories and near misses in the Champions League.

But Lampard has made it clear he does not want to see out the rest of his career on the subs bench and lacking respect from his manager.

He has a year left on his contract which would help force a fee up to £10m, but it could be less than that if you take into account wages that puts him right at the top of the tree at Stamford Bridge.

It would be seen as a clever move by Fergie though who wants to bring his young players through, so Lampard would be perfect for the next 18 months.

He has always had the upmost respect for Lampard and has shown interest in signing him in the past.

BARCA EYE RAVEL MORRISON
14th January 2012

RAVEL MORRISON is a shock target of European champions Barcelona.

The Manchester United starlet has failed to agree a new deal at Old Trafford and Barca boss Pep Guardiola is considering an audacious swoop for the teenage sensation.

Morrison is regarded as the biggest natural talent to come through the United ranks since Paul Scholes and Ryan Giggs.

But he has been dogged by off-field problems and question marks over his attitude and Sir Alex Ferguson, despite standing by him and being reluctant to let him go, is close to running out of patience.

Guardiola has studied videos of Morrison, 18, and sent one of his scouts to watch him in action earlier this season.

He has been asked to be kept informed of Morrison’s situation with a view to making a bid for the midfielder, who will become a free agent in 02 six months’ time.

News of Barca’s interest in Morrison will stun United boss Ferguson, who will be reluctant to lose one of his most promising youngsters to his main European rival.

United have rejected a £1m bid from Newcastle for Morrison, who is also a target of several other European and Premier League clubs, including Tottenham, Everton and Aston Villa.

A source said: “Some of the biggest clubs in Europe have shown genuine interest in him, including Barcelona, so it will be interesting to see what happens. He isn’t short of options.”

Fergie claims the player has turned down a new deal with the champions and has made unrealistic personal demands.

But Starsport understands that, despite talks taking place about his future, no offer has been put on the table.

It is understood Morrison is keen to quit United because he has been left out of the first-team picture in recent weeks.

This was expected to be his break- through season but he has seen his career stall, despite United suffering crippling injury problems. He has made just two Carling Cup appearances this season and reckons Fergie has not given him a fair crack of the whip.

To make matters worse he’s been forced to train with the reserves and feels he might have no choice but to leave United.

Paul Scholes’s sudden decision to come out of retirement will push Morrison even further down the pecking order.

It remains to be seen if Barca make a bid for Morrison, but the Magpies are expected to make an improved bid next week in the hope of securing a deal.

Fergie said: “His agent has been working hard to get him another club. We’ve offered him terms which he has refused so that is where it is.

“We’ve rejected an offer from Newcastle and it is now down to how that progresses. His demands are unrealistic as far as we are concerned.”

Morrison found himself in court twice in five months and hit out at Fergie in November on Twitter after being left on the bench for a reserve game, stating he “couldn’t wait until the end of the season’’.

This earned him a public dressing-down from Wayne Rooney who responded: “It might come sooner than you think!”
