Champions League: Chelsea will meet Benfica in quarter-finals

John Terry

Chelsea have been drawn to face Benfica in the Champions League quarter-finals, playing away in the first leg.
If Chelsea triumph, they will meet the winners of the quarter-final between AC Milan and Barcelona with the first leg on home soil.
In the other last-eight ties, Apoel Nicosia play Real Madrid and Marseille take on Bayern Munich.
Chelsea chief executive Ron Gourlay told BBC Sport: "We are quite happy with the draw."He added: "We don't focus on the semi-finals. We have got to the quarter-finals and we wanted an away tie first."
The London club reached the quarter-finals with a thrilling victory over Napoli. Having lost the first leg 3-1 , they completed a 4-1 home win in extra time to triumph.
Former manager Andre Villas-Boas was sacked by Chelsea a fortnight after the defeat in Naples, leading to Roberto Di Matteo taking charge on a caretaker basis .
Di Matteo said: "When you get down to the last eight teams, any draw is difficult. I've seen Benfica many times. They were in Man United's group. It's a tough game for us."
He refused to contemplate a potential semi-final against Barcelona, saying: "Are you writing off AC Milan straight away, as easy as that - the leaders of Serie A? Game by game - that's what I've learnt in my playing career and my coaching career."
Reflecting on the second-leg win against Napoli, Gourlay said: "It shows you the quality we've got in the football team that one or two people were doubting. They followed the brief of the coach and everything went well.
"When we asked guys to stand up, they stood up to be counted."
When asked about player power at the club, he responded: "It's certainly not the case. John Terry does orchestrate things on the field but, to be perfectly honest, we would encourage that. There is nothing wrong with that - it just shows the passion.
"He was still doing his bit to help us win that game when he wasn't on the field, which is fantastic. Didier Drogba, Petr Cech - they would have all done the same."Discussing Villas-Boas's exit, he said: "It was a very difficult decision that the owner and board had to take. Andre brought many positives to the club - and we thank him for that - but that wasn't reflected in results and performances.
"We couldn't see that changing so we felt that we had to make the change. Time will tell and we'll see where we are at the end of the season.
"I don't think it was anything to do with the players. The players are very professional."
Benfica won Group C, which included Manchester United, and reached the last eight for the first time since 2006 by beating Zenit St Petersburg 4-3 on aggregate. The Portuguese side had lost 3-2 in Russia butwon 2-0 in the return match on home soil.
The Portuguese club are currently second in their domestic league, a point behind Porto.
Chelsea have two former Benfica players in their squad - the Brazilians David Luiz and Ramires.
Benfica sports director and former player Rui Costa said: "Everyone knows Chelsea's potential. We're ready for anything."

Lewis Hamilton beats McLaren team-mate Jenson Button to pole

Lewis Hamilton drives in Australia

Lewis Hamilton beat McLaren team-mate Jenson Button to take pole position for the season-opening Australian Grand Prix.
Hamilton was 0.152 seconds faster than Button, with Lotus's Romain Grosjean an impressive third fastest ahead of Mercedes driver Michael Schumacher. The Red Bulls of Mark Webber and world champion Sebastian Vettel could manage only fifth and sixth places.
Ferrari struggled, with Fernando Alonso 12th and Felipe Massa 16th.
Hamilton set his time on his first run in qualifying, when he was a massive 0.7secs faster than his rivals.
But he failed to improve on his second run and Button came close to beating him, losing out following a small mistake at Turn 14.
Hamilton said: "We've had a couple of tough years but we never gave up.
"It was a good lap. The second lap I tried to brake 10m later into Turn One to see if I could do it, but it didn't work out. Fortunately the first lap was good.
"Jenson did a fantastic job, he was very close behind me and as always keeping me on my toes."
Button added: "I was actually a bit surprised by the gap back to the Red Bulls and some of the other guys but we'll take that."
BBC F1 co-commentator David Coulthard said: "It was incredible. The big surprise was that the Ferraris were not part of that top 10, but what impressive laps from the McLaren drivers. The frustration at Ferrari must be immense right now."
Ferrari's performance confirmed the impression, from pre-season testing and the practice sessions here this weekend, that they are struggling with a difficult car.
Alonso spun off at Turn One after his first run in second qualifying. Massa managed both his planned runs in the session but was a second slower and 16th.Coulthard said: "There's something fundamentally wrong with that car.
"I remember at McLaren we had a car that never raced - it was the 19, and I remember when you got on the brakes and under lateral loading it just used to drift sideways.
"It never gave you confidence, and it looks like they have a similar issue with that car."
Mercedes, who are racing under the threat of a protest from rivals over a contentious design on their cars, had looked set to battle for pole but in the end were not quite quick enough.
Schumacher was just 0.034secs slower than Grosjean, but team-mate Nico Rosberg, who is usually faster in qualifying, had two untidy laps and ended up seventh.
The session suggests the domination of Red Bull of the last two seasons may be over.
They never looked liked challenging the McLarens, and Webber and Vettel ended up separated by just 0.017secs, but 0.7secs slower than Hamilton.
Williams, who enter 2012 determined to improve after the worst season in their history, had a good day with Pastor Maldonado in eighth place.
Force India's Nico Hulkenberg was ninth, ahead of Toro Rosso's Daniel Ricciardo.Hulkenberg was considerably faster than team-mate Paul di Resta, who was only 15th after being 0.7secs slower than the German in second qualifying.
Grosjean's team-mate Kimi Raikkonen qualified 18th on his return to Formula 1 after two years in rallying.
The Finn made a mistake on one lap, and then failed to make it round to start another after a mix-up with the team.
Raikkonen, who has been faster than Grosjean in pre-season testing, was disappointed with the mistakes that led to his poor grid position.
"I slowed down because we were supposed to have time for one more lap and I guess we didn't," he said.
"Nobody told me when I slowed down that I had to hurry up. There's no point to blame anybody and everyone is as disappointed as me. It's a bad start."
Neither HRT driver set a time within 107% of the fastest in first qualifying, and will only be allowed to race if officials give them an exemption.
The team arrived in Australia with no significant pre-season testing.

Fan power may lead to ban on F1 new 'stepped noses'

Fan power may lead to a ban on the ugly new "stepped noses" on this year's Formula One cars, the sport's ruling body has conceded.
International Motoring Federation (FIA) technical chief Charlie Whiting said that he will raise the matter as soon as he can -- hoping to remove them for next year.
"Everybody would like to see something that looks nicer," said Whiting. "So of course I will raise the question at the next meeting of the Technical Working Group."
He agreed that there had been a critical reaction from many F1 fans complaining at the new look of the cars, made as part of a way for teams to conform to new safety regulations.
"In 2014 the rules will be entirely different and there will be much, much lower noses so that problem will disappear that year, I imagine," Whiting told autosport.com.
He added that there may have been more appetite to change the noses sooner had they realised just how widespread the new style would be.
"At that point, I don't think anyone outside of the very small group of designers that were creating the cars knew what they might look like," he said.
"It was pointed out that there could be a bit of a step there, as it was put, but frankly it didn't seem important for us to get excited about.
"Hopefully we can resolve the situation, but by the time we do that maybe everyone will have got used to what we have got."

Spain will longer host 2 formula 1 race from 2013: Bernie Ecclestone

Sebastian Vettel
Spain is likely to stage only one Grand Prix a season from 2013, with Barcelona and Valencia alternating as host.
Local authorities in the country are under pressure to save money as part of a government austerity drive.
Formula 1 chief Bernie Ecclestone told radio station Cadena Ser: "It's simply a way for us to try to help Valencia."
Valencia's local government suggested in January that it wished to renegotiate a race fee of around 25 million euros (£20.6m) a year.
The 2012 calendar contains 20 races, with the Spanish Grand Prix in Barcelona on 13 May and the European Grand Prix in Valencia on 24 June.
It is unclear whether another race would be introuduced to replace the one that drops off the calendar, although Ecclestone has previously said he would ideally like to extend the calendar to 25 races.
Vicente Aguilera, president of Barcelona's Montmelo circuit, said an agreement is still yet to be fully agreed.
"We are negotiating and we have a positive attitude," he told sports daily newspaper Marca.
"At this moment nothing is agreed."

Messi broke champion league record single score:Barcelona rout Bayer Leverkusen in Nou Camp 7-1

Lionel Messi scores for Barcelona in their Champions Leauge victory over Bayer Leverkusen.
8 march,2012

Lionel Messi broke his own Champions League record as he scored five goals in Barcelona's 7-1 demolition of Bayer Leverkusen in their second leg last 16 tie Wednesday.
The World Player of the Year had set the previous best of four against Arsenal two season ago and proceeded to go one better with a dazzling display in the Nou Camp.
He now has 12 goals from seven Champions League matches this season as the defending champions waltzed into the quarterfinals 10-2 on aggregate against their unfortunate German opponents.
"You can expect anything from Leo," teammate Cesc Fabregas told AFP.
"He is the best player in history, we have never seen anyone like him."
Trailing 3-1 from the first leg, the Bundesliga side could not contain Messi as he scored twice before the break in the 25th and 42nd minutes.
Messi claimed his hat-trick early in the second with a lob after he eluded a static Bayer defense from a Fabregas through pass.
Youngster Chritian Tello added Barca's fourth, again set up by former Arsenal star Fabregas.
Messi then scored from a tight angle for his fourth after a defensive error and goalkeeper Bernd Leno was at fault again as he allowed a weak Tello shot to go in for the sixth.
Messi's fifth with six minutes to go was unstoppable before Karim Bellarabi scored a consolation for the visitors.
The night's other Champions League tie saw triumph for Cypriot underdogs Apoel Nicosia as they reached the quarterfinals for the first time in their history.
Apoel beat French giants Lyon 1-0 after extra time for a 1-1 aggregate score then won the penalty shootout 4-3.
Dionissis Chiotis was the home hero with two saves in the shootout after Gustavo Manduca scored the only goal of the night in normal time to cancel out Alexandre Lacazette's winner for Lyon in the first leg.

Arsenal beat Milan

Thomas Vermaelen, Gervinho and Robin van Persie are disappointed at the final whistle
7 March 2012
The Gunners beat Milan 3-0 in the second leg of their last 16 clash but lost 4-3 on aggregate.
A top-four Premier League place is now the aim for Wenger, who said: "It is a big disappointment for the players but the team have grown together.
"Hopefully from here we can finish the season in a strong way.
AC Milan's 4-3 aggregate victory over Arsenal ends their run of defeats against Premier League opposition in the last 16 of the Champions League. They have been knocked out by Tottenham (2010-11), Manchester United (2009-10) and the Gunners (2007-08) in recent seasons
With 11 games to play, Arsenal sit fourth in the table after beating third-placed Tottenham and seventh-placed Liverpool in their last two league matches.
"We know there is no room for disappointment in the league," Wenger said. "For us every point is a battle and until the end of the season that is what is in front of us.
"Basically our target is possible because we are four points behind Tottenham. We have to go step by step. We have another big game on Monday night against Newcastle.
"For us, it is clear - we have to win our games."
Wenger's side can approach their task with renewed optimism after morale-boosting wins in their last three outings in all competitions.
For a while, their performance over Milan promised to bring them an unlikely quarter-final place, but Wenger was still grateful that his side salvaged some pride after the miserable defeat in the San Siro three weeks
"We restored a good performance tonight and we are disappointed because we touched qualification," Wenger said.
"We had the chances and we didn't do it, but we were very close. I felt that we suffered a bit in the second half physically because we gave a lot at Liverpool.
"When we tired in midfield we had no options on the bench and the regret I have is there.
"The players put in a faultless performance, with fantastic spirit, and you can only congratulate the whole team.
"If you win 3-0 at home, you can only say well done to the players.
"You know that if you play 180 minutes and you miss 90, it is difficult at that level. We were very close."

New chelsea coach wins a match!!!

CECH: KEEP ON WINNING
7 March 2012
Chelsea battled to a 2-0 win at second flight Birmingham in an FA Cup replay Tuesday in Roberto di Matteo's first game since taking over from the sacked Andre Villas-Boas.
Two goals in six second-half minutes by Juan Mata and Raul Meireles ensured the Italian made a winning start to his reign as interim manager as the west-London side made the last eight of the famous cup competition.
Di Matteo also showed he will be his own man by leaving midfielder Frank Lampard and striker Didier Drogba on the substitutes' bench, but his side were good enough to advance to a quarterfinal home tie to another Championship club in Leicester on March 18.
There was also a welcome return to the bench for Chelsea captain John Terry, who has made a quick return from a knee injury.
Chelsea were unimpressive in the first half and Fernando Torres continued his goal drought by missing a great chance, while Valencia player Nikola Zigic, forced visiting keeper Petr Cech into a stunning one-handed save.
But in the 54th minute, Mata slotted home from close range after a Ramires cross had caused problems for the home side.
On the hour, Portugal star Meireles struck with a superb long range strike to effectively seal victory.
They could even afford to see Mata's 69th minute penalty saved by Colin Doyle after Torres was brought down by Guirane N'Daw.
Cech, captain for the day, told ITV they had to put the Villas-Boas sacking behind them.
"You have to move on. Today was the first step," Cech said.
"The board and the directors took the decision (to sack Villas-Boas) which you as a player have to respect."
Meanwhile, Carlos Tevez paid his first game in front of the public since healing his rift with Manchester City manager Roberto Mancini.
Tevez scored the equalizer for City reserves as they beat their Bolton counterparts 3-1 Tuesday. He was substituted almost immediately after getting on the scoresheet in the Manchester Senior Cup tie.
